Modern Polish Formulations

Modern nail polish formulations are now mixed with synthetic resins for maximum gloss, pigments, and wearing properties. They have certainly come a long way from their early formulations.

Today, the basic ingredient in nail lacquer is still nitrocellulose (cellulose nitrate) cotton, a liquid mixed with microscopic cotton fibers. Other ingredients are added: solvents like butyl acetate that evaporate quickly, thus speeding up the drying process; film-forming agents; resins and plasticizers; solvents; and coloring agents. Various other resins and plasticizers like castor oil or glycerine are added to improve the flexibility and water resistance of the polish. For polishes with pearlescent finishes, the manufactures might add mica or even ground-up fish scales.
Nail polishes makers have been under pressure to reduce or eliminate potentially toxic ingredients, including phrhalates, toluene, and formaldehyde, from their nail polish formulations. There are two ingredients in particular that can cause allergic reactions in sentive individuals.

1- Toluene
is manufactured from petroleum by-products and can cause contact dematitis; clues to look for might be red and swollen eyelids.

2- Formaldehyde
is commonly used in nail hardeners and is a chemical preservative that can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. The first clue is a rash.

Phthalates or phthalate esters

are esters of phthalic acid and are mainly used as plasticizers (substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity). They are used primarily to soften polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Phthalates are being phased out of many products in the United States, Canada, and European Union over health concerns.

Allergic reactions
Allergic reactions to nail polish may first appear on your eye lids. If your eyelids become red and swollen after buying a new polish, this is a clue that you may be allergic to some of the ingredients. Because the skin of the eyelids is so delicate, it is particularly susceptible to contact dematitis, which means your nails or hands have probably rudded your eyes.
